Lithographs from Lower Danube

02.07.2019

Sonya Machorska

The exhibition "Landscapes from the Lower Danube" of the Archives State Agency of Bulgaria was opened today in Vidin. The exhibition includes thirty lithographs in the 19th-century "vedu" genre - panoramic images of cities with military strongholds along the Lower Danube. Their authors are Adolf Kunike, A. von Saar, F. Wolf and Ludwig Ermini. The lithographs are part of the monarchic institute fund, kept in the Central State Archives of Bulgaria, and show the architecture, landscape and clothing of the people in these cities. The exhibition also includes travel notes from the 18th - 19th centuries.

A veduta (Italian for "view"; plural vedute) is a highly detailed, usually large-scale painting or, more often, print of a cityscape or some other vista. The painters of vedute are referred to as vedutisti. This genre of landscape originated in Flanders, where artists such as Paul Bril painted vedute as early as the 16th century. In the 17th century Dutch painters made a specialty of detailed and accurate recognizable city and landscapes that appealed to the sense of local pride of the wealthy Dutch middle class. An archetypal example is Johannes Vermeer's View of Delft. The Ghent architect, draughtsman and engraver Lieven Cruyl (1640-1720) contributed to the development of the vedute during his residence in Rome in the late 17th century. Cruyl’s drawings reproduce the topographical aspects of the urban landscape

Adolph Friedrich Kunike, after studying philosophy and defending his Ph.D., became a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1804. From 1808 to 1810 he studied in Rome a picturesque story. In 1817 he opened a lithography institute in Vienna. Originally artistically active, Kunike is later confined to the lithographic duplication and management of his own company, which becomes a nursery of the artist's lithography, especially the portrait and landscape. He has published serial works, among the most significant of which are two hundred and forty Danube views - from the spring to the inflow into the Black Sea.
